Originally released in 1963, Stardust consists of two separate recording sessions during Coltrane's hard bop era. The sessions took place in July and December of 1958 at legendary engineer Rudy Van Gelder's studio, and feature an incredible lineup of musicians: Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Wilbur Harden on trumpet & flugelhorn, Red Garland on piano, bassist Paul Chambers and drummers Jimmy Cobb and Art Taylor. Both sessions produced some of Coltrane's most impressive balladry, while the extended performances on this album boast additional delights, including Paul Chambers' acoustic Arco bass on 'Stardust,' Red Garland's well-paced choruses on 'Time After Time,' Wilbur Harden's outstanding trumpet work on 'Love Thy Neighbor,' and some of Freddie Hubbard's earliest work on 'Then I'll Be Tired of You.'
